Day 12 of 17 (New Mexico)

From: Farmington, NM
To: Los Alamos, NM
Miles Driven: 222 Today / 3,617 Total
Miles Hiked: 2.2 (plus 140 feet of ladders) / 12.8 Total

I am supposed to be telling you about our day at Angel Fire Resort on zip lines, eurobungee, and climbing walls...but I failed as a navigator.

I put in the address of our hotel instead of Angel Fire Resort (which would have meant adding an extra 4 hours round trip to our drive and very little time at the resort once we actually arrived) so there was no easy way to fix my mistake.

Instead we headed to Bandalier National Monument (which was supposed to be in a few days). It was only 15 miles away so it made sense, but now I'm sitting in our hotel room trying to figure out how to "fix" the last few days of the trip.

Bandalier was pretty awesome though. It had houses/rooms carved into the cliff walls and they even had places they allowed you to climb inside.   But it was HOT.  The closer to the cliff walls the hotter it got. You can feel the heat off the walls.

We added an extra mile to our hike to hit a place called the Alcove. It had 140 feet of ladders plus some steps that took you up stupid high to this beautiful alcove in the cliff side. It was an added bonus that it was easily 10-20 degrees cooler in the alcove.

Day 11 of 17 (Colorado to New Mexico)

From: Grand Junction, CO
To: Farmington, NM
Miles Driven: 372 Today / 3,395 Total
Miles Hiked: Not Sure / 10.6 Total

Today started with a long drive. It started off driving through mountains. SUPER curvy roads. Despite nausea meds we had 2 kids down.

We went to Mesa Verde to see the cliff dwellings. They were pretty awesome to see. They have different phases too so you could see how the dwellings evolved and grew. However, Jordan found this nasty and huge bug as big (long and wide) as my thumb. Then I noticed the tree it was on was COVERED in the things. THEN we found they were just the husks/shells like the darn things outgrew their skin. How much bigger did they get? It was totally the start of some alien takeover movie.

Next we headed to 4 corners. Aside from saying "we've been there" it isn't worth the visit.  At this point I was also feeling pretty yucky. I think the sun/heat of the day was getting to me. The drive to the hotel was the sort of drive I'm used to driving through Central California. Hot, bare, dry, sort of boring. Yay for audiobooks!
